Dell iDRAC vFlash Card — Remote Media Mounting for PowerEdge Servers

The Dell iDRAC vFlash card is a 32GB microSD storage device that installs in the dedicated vFlash socket on compatible Dell PowerEdge server motherboards. Once installed, it activates the vFlash feature in iDRAC Enterprise. The feature creates a persistent local storage partition for OS images and diagnostic tools. This creates a persistent local storage partition for ISO images and diagnostic tools. Administrators mount this storage as virtual media via the iDRAC web interface. The server sees it as a virtual USB device.

The primary use case for the Dell iDRAC vFlash card is remote OS provisioning. An IT administrator uploads an OS installation ISO to the vFlash partition via the iDRAC interface. The server boots from the mounted virtual media and proceeds through the OS installation. No physical USB drive, optical disc or on-site technician is required.

Persistent Mount Across Reboots

Network-mounted virtual media requires an active workstation connection throughout the full installation. An ISO stored on the Dell iDRAC vFlash card remains mounted across reboots instead. This is essential when provisioning servers at remote sites. OS installation restarts do not interrupt the media connection. The process completes without monitoring or intervention.

The 32GB capacity holds a full OS installation ISO alongside supplementary tools and recovery scripts. Most current OS installations fit comfortably within this space.

Compatibility and OEM Validation

The Dell iDRAC vFlash card works with iDRAC8 Enterprise on 13th generation servers. It also supports iDRAC9 Enterprise on 14th generation PowerEdge platforms. It installs in the microSD slot accessible from the server rear panel. Using a validated Dell OEM card avoids firmware recognition failures. Generic microSD alternatives can cause reliability issues in this specific iDRAC application.
